Project Community Care Day, Saturday, August 21, 2010


FLIP (Franklin Landscape Improvement Project) invites all alums and friends of Franklin High School to Project Community Care Day on Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Franklin campus. Members of the Imago Dei church will be there assisting FLIP and volunteers with a campus-wide sprucing up of Franklin in preparation for the new school year. FLIP will be working at the Woodward Street entrance, while the members of the church will be working the remainder of the campus grounds. Class of 1968 Picnic Saturday, August 7, 2010


The Class of 1968 is hosting a picnic at the Milwaukie Elks on Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is a potluck. Please bring your own chair and your own beverages. Table service will be provided. There is no charge, however donations are gladly accepted.

15th Annual Herm Schattenberg Memorial Golf Tournment Sunday, August 29, 2010

Hello FHS Golfers
The 15th Annual Herm Schattenberg Memorial Golf Tournament is Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the Colwood National Golf Course at 67th and NE Columbia Blvd.
The first scramble time is 11:15 a.m.

The tournament is open to all FHS classes and their friends and relatives so please pass the word. The cost per player (including 18 holes and a cart) is $60.00. A 'no host' dinner will be available after the tournament.

Individuals and teams need to register with Russ Brown by August 10, 2010.

Alums and honored guests gathered at the Eastmoreland Golf Club for the first Members Only Alumni luncheon on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Despite the chilly spring day outside, alums enjoyed the warmth of visiting with old friends and a delicious lunch prepared by the staff at Eastmoreland. Eighty alums were in attendance, including several who graduated in the 1930s. The luncheon also raised $1,200.00 for Franklin High School. Special thanks to guest speaker and alum Ken Thrasher ('67), who donated $250.00 to the FHSAA for Franklin High School during the event and to the Class of 1964 who donated $500.00. The gathering was so successful that the date has been set for next year's luncheon. If you missed this year, be sure and join the Franklin High School Alumni Association and plan to attend the Second Members Only luncheon on Saturday, May 21, 2011.

Spring Clean-Up Day at Franklin High School, Saturday, May 22, 2010

FLIP (Franklin Landscape Improvement Project) and the Alumni Association are joining forces to spruce up the Franklin campus in time for graduation on Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Alums, friends of Franklin, staff, parents, students and neighbors are invited to stop by and lend a hand. Bring gardening gloves, something to kneel on and gardening tools. Coffee and donuts will be served to all the volunteers and water will also be available. We hope to see you there!

Weed and Feed Party for FLIP on Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. until Noon


FLIP (Franklin Lanscape Improvment Project) kicks off this year's work with a Weed and Feed Party on Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon. They will work on the Woodward Street entrance, sprucing up the courtyard and preparing the Alumni Cherry Grove for pathways and planting in May. Students, families, alumni, teachers, staff, friends and neighbors are all welcome. Bring gloves, something to kneel on and a rake if you have one. FLIP also received a grant from Southeast Uplift and the City of Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement's Neighborhood Small Grants Program to continue their hard work on improving the landscape around Franklin.

A very big thank you to FLIP from the Alumni Association for their continued efforts to make Franklin High School shine.

Congratulations to Shoni Schimmel, Member of Parade Magazine's All-American High School Girls Basketball Team

Franklin senior Shoni Schimmel was chosen for the first team of Parade Magazine's All-American High School Girls Basketball Team on March 28, 2010. Franklin girls basketball coach, Ceci Moses, is Shoni's mother. Shoni averaged 30 points and 7.7 assists during the season. For more about the team please visit Parade magazine. Congratulations Princess Bergen Rueck

Bergen Rueck, 18, was named Franklin High School's 2010 Rose Festival princesss. Her sister, Bryndle, was Franklin's princess in 2005. Bergen hopes to attend Western Oregon University to study eary childhood education. The queen of Rosaria will be crowned Saturday, June 12, 2010 before the start of the Grand Floral Parade. All Class Alumni Picnic Set for Mt. Tabor Park on Sunday, August 15, 2010


The fifth annual all Franklin classes reunion picnic will be held Sunday, August 15, 2010 at
Mt. Tabor Park , Site B, closest to the entrance at SE 68th and Yamhill. The picnic starts at 1:00 p.m and goes until 5:00 p.m. Bring your own food and beverages plus lawn chairs for added comfort. Enjoy A Slice And Help Support Franklin on Tuesday, April 13, 2010


Join your friends and alumni for lunch or dinner and support Franklin High School on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Pizzicato Pizza at SE 61st and Division is once again donating 20% of the day's proceeds to the Franklin PTA to support school activities. Pizzicato features delicious pizza, salads and calzone, so you are sure to find something wonderful to eat. Proceeds from last year's Pizzicato fundraiser helped print the Franklin Post student newspaper, paid for low-income students to attend a poetry colloquium and paid for leadership students to attend training.

Franklin classes who have had their 50th reunion, watch your mailbox this next week for your Alumni Picnic Flyer. This year's picnic at Oaks Park is Friday, July 9, 2010. The picnic begins at 11:00 a.m., with a delicious fried chicken lunch served at 12:30 p.m. The cost for the event is $20.00 per person. There will be a raffle with proceeds going to the Franklin High School Alumni Association. The Alumni Picnic at Oaks is sponsored by Quaker classes who have celebrated their 50th reunion or more. Franklin and Cleveland alums took to the fairways of Eastmoreland Golf Course in September 2009 to battle for golf bragging rights in Southeast Portland. Cleveland took the cup for the fourth year in a row. We are calling for Franklin golfers to play in the 2010 tournament which will tee off on September 30, 2010 at Eastmoreland. Google Group Regarding the Portland Public Schools High School Redesign Process

The Franklin High School PTA has created a "Google group" regarding the high school redesign process under consideration by the Portland Public School Board. All alums are welcome to join in and post their comments and concerns about how this plan may affect the future of Franklin High School. Franklin Team Places Fourth in State Consitutional Law Contest

Congratulations to the Franklin High School Constitutional Law team for placing fourth in the state finals of the "We the People" constitutional law contest. The contest challenges students' knowledge of the U.S. Constituion, the Bill of Rights and other documents and laws pertaining to them. Six teams, plus a wild-card team, competed. Each team in the contest was the top finisher from a congressional district here in Oregon. The Alumni Association honors their acheivement and wishes them success in next year's contest.

Franklin High School Alumni Band Set to Perform on Sunday, January 31, 2010

A Franklin High School Alumni Band featuring Andy Madson ('75), Dale Drenner ('76), Steve Rodgers ('76) and Danny Haay Davis (Franklin parent) will be playing at the Montavilla Station on Sunday, January 31, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Steve Rodgers band, "Chihauhau Desert" will also play from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Please plan to bring a potluck dish to share and lot's of bread. Large Crowd Shows Their Support for Keeping Franklin High School Open

An overflow crowd of approximately 2,000 people attended a meeting at Franklin High School on Thursday, December 17, 2009 regarding the future of the school. The Portland Public School Board of Directors heard from students, alumni, parents and teachers. The large crowd clearly showed the importance Franklin holds in the community and in the hearts of those associated with the school.
